Confidence in humanity slips another notch…

Charlie is confused!A Gallop poll released to commemorate the 200th birthday of Charles Darwin revealed that only 39% of Americans believe in the theory of evolution. My reaction can be summarized by one simple word: WHAT???
Also, according to the poll 25% flat-out don’t believe in evolution, while 36% have no opinion either way.
How is it possible that in an industrialized nation, with a supposedly world-class educational system, 61% of its population either reject outright or dismiss evolution. Haven’t these people been to a natural history museum in their lives? Haven’t these people at least seen Jurassic Park, for goodness sake???
I don’t know what to think, really. Should I have expected this? Should I truly be surprised that the majority of people prefer to explain things with magic and religion rather than from what they can see and touch? I admit, I’m a pretty skeptic guy, but I’ve seen the bones of our ancestors and I know they don’t look like us. And I know we haven’t been been here for so long. So, the only possible answer is that they changed into us and the most logical explanation is, well, evolution.
I’m a teacher and this really irks me. How about you?
